A Brief History of Dodge
Dodge was founded by the brothers Horace and John Dodge in 1900, and started out by producing components and parts for automobile manufacturers.
By 1914 the brothers desired to design and produce their own vehicles. Dodge experienced early success with the Dodge Model 30, an upscale alternative to the Ford Model T. However, both Dodge brothers died in 1920, and the company slipped up in the years after their deaths. Dodge was sold to Chrysler in 1928. During WWII, Dodge produced a ton of vehicles for the war effort, and earned the respect of military members who experienced the durability of Dodge trucks and ambulances.
After WWII, Dodge took off. In 1953 Dodge introduced its first V8 engine, the Red Rad Hemi, and in 1955 Dodge began upgrading its engines and styling for all of its models. During the 60’s and 70’s, Dodge would gain fame for producing iconic muscle cars, such as the Charger and the Challenger. The oil crisis in the 70’s hurt Dodge, and they took a while to modify its vehicles to be more economical.
