A Brief History of Mazda

Mazda is a Japanese automaker, and the 15th largest automaker in the world. It was founded in Japan in 1920 as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. The company started out manufacturing machine tools, and moved up to producing vehicles in 1931.

The first Mazda car produced in 1931 was the Mazda-Go, which was a three-wheeled truck. The truck was exported primarily to China until WWII, when the company was forced to start producing rifles for the Japanese military. Vehicle production started back up in 1949, and by 1958 Mazda has produced its first four-wheeled truck, the Mazda Romper.

Mazda made a name for itself by producing rotary engines and using them in its vehicles. The vehicles were powerful and very light, which made them excellent racing cars. However, rotary engines are prone to more fuel usage, and the gas crisis of 1973 forced Mazda to once again focus on piston engines.

Nowadays Mazda offers several vehicles with rotary engines for the sports car enthusiasts. The RX7 was introduced in 1978, and the RX8 is the modern version of the rotary engine-powered Mazda sports car.
